Recent Australian Television Series

Return to the main Australian Facts and Figures Index page here

Australian production companies have produced and continue to produce some fantastic entertainment and news programs for the small screen. A few have even made a successful entry onto the international arena. Home and Away and Neighbours are two of the many television series showing to huge audiences internationally.

Major Australian Free-To-Air Television Networks

The predominant free-to-air television stations in Australia are:

ABC (public state-owned broadcaster)
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, commonly referred to as the ABC, is Australia's national public broadcaster. Founded in 1929 as the Australian Broadcasting Company, it was subsequently nationalised and made a state-owned corporation on 1 July 1932, as the Australian Broadcasting Commission. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983 changed the name of the organisation to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, effective 1 July 1983.

Network Ten (commercial television)
Network Ten, or Channel Ten, is one of Australia's three major commercial television networks. Owned-and-operated stations can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, while affiliates extend the network to cover most of the country. Ten consistently rates third amongst all channels in Australia's five largest cities, behind the Seven Network and Nine Network.

Nine Network (commercial television)
The Nine Network, or Channel Nine, is an Australian television network based in Willoughby, a suburb on the North Shore of Sydney. One of three major free-to-air commercial networks in Australia, its retired slogan the long-running "Still The One" refers to the network's past ratings success, being the most popular television station on a national basis since the introduction of television in Australia. Nationally, the network has consistently proven itself the most watched television network, defeated only three times by its main rival, the Seven Network, (in 2000, 2007 and 2008).

SBS (national public television channel)
SBS TV, sometimes SBS, is a national public television channel in Australia. Launched on 24 October 1980, it is the responsibility of SBS's television division, and is available nationally. As of 2007, SBS TV has a 5.5% audience share.

Seven Network (commercial television)
The Seven Network is an Australian television network owned by the Seven Media Group. It dates back to 2 December 1956, when the first stations on the VHF7 frequency were established in Sydney and Melbourne. It is currently the largest network in the country in terms of population reach.[2] Seven had historically been the second highest rating television network in Australia, trailing its traditional rival the Nine Network, but just ahead of Network Ten. However, Seven's standing against Nine has improved in recent years, winning the ratings year in 2000, 2007 and 2008.

Australia also plays host to a range of regional and community broadcast television stations.
